APPENDIX B  

The Indentures and Letters of John Hancock are held by the Derby Local Studies Library, amongst the Duesbury Papers which are denoted by the reference code DL82 ....  

THIS INDENTURE,made the Twenty Ninth Day of September One Thousand Seven Hundredand  Sixty Nine Between John Hancock Son of George Hancock of the  Boroughof Derby   of the first part and the said  George Hancock of the second partand WILLIAM DUESBURY, of Derby aforesaid, CHINA or PORCELAIN maker of the third, Part, Witnesseth,  that the said John Hancock of his own free will and by and with the consent and approbation  of his said father testified by his being made a party hereto and executing hereof doth  put himself Apprentice to the said WILLIAM DUESBURY  to learn the Art, of painting upon China or Porcelain or China Wareand with him after the Manner of an Apprentice to serve from the Day of the Date of these Presents,   for and during and unto the full End and Term of Seven Yearsfully to be complete and ended; during all  which Term the said Apprentice  shall serve his said Master, his Executors, and Administrators, with his whole Abilities, and Services.  He shall carry on no separate Trade or  Dealing, with any other Person, nor buy or sell, but with the Consent, and under the Directions of his said Master, his Executors and Administrators, and immediately for his and their sole Use and Benefit;  and shall and will in all Things, and at all Times, obey and execute the lawful Commands of his said Master, his Executors and Administrators, and all put in Authority under him and them, and behave himself as an honest and diligent Apprentice, during all the said Term.  And the said WILLIAM DUESBURY, in Consideration of the Premises, doth, for Himself, his Executors, and Administrators, covenant and agree with the said Apprentice, That  he the said WILLIAM DUESBURY, his Executors, and  Adminstrators. shall and will, Instruct and Teach the said Apprentice, or cause him to be instructed  and taught in the Art of Painting upon China or Porcelain  Ware  in the best Manner that He, his Executors, or Administrators, can;  and shall and will, allow and pay to his  said Apprentice, the several Weekly Sums following, for all such Time as he shall work,  that is to say  One Shilling and Six Pence a Week for the first Year of the said  Term,   Two Shillings a Week for the second Year,  Two Shillings and six pence  a week for the third Year,  Three Shillings a Week for the fourth Year, Four Shillings a Week for the fifth Year,  Five Shillings a Week for the sixth Year, and Six Shillings a Week for the seventh Year of the said term the said Apprentice finding and providing for himself Meat, Drink, Washing, Lodging, and all other Necessaries, during the said Term;  provided nevertheless, that if the said Apprentice shall voluntarily lose, or mispend any of his Time, and wilfully neglect to work the usual Time of Service,   performed by other Apprentices, that then the said Apprentice shall and will serve over such Time as he shall so waste or mispend, immediately after the Expiration of the Term herein mentioned, at such Weekly Allowance as he would have been entitled to in the respective Years wherein such time shall be  so oft or mispent, as aforesaid, before he shall be entitled to a Discharge from his said Apprenticeship.
